Hike To Ptarmigan Lake, Colorado (Photos - September 9, 2007)

Another friend (Chris a.k.a. "Florida Nuke") was in town with his wife and in-laws, and I was pursuaded to go on an early Sunday morning hike. I suggested the trail to Ptarmigan Lake near Cottonwood Pass would be a good first hike as they acclimate to the altitude during their week-long visit to Buena Vista. From the trailhead at Cottonwood Pass Road, it is 3.3 miles one way to the lake.

I love this bottom photo, by the way. With my back practically at the lake, I snapped this shot looking towards my hiking group with some scenic mountains behind.

Mt. Yale
I walked to the western side of the lake to capture these three adjacent pictures.

Mt. Yale is the towering mountain in the second and third photos, with Turner Peak being the pointed peak to the left on the second photo.

The last time I visited Ptarmigan Lake was on August 4, 2007, when Steve Quilico and I drove his 4-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle past Cottonwood Lake into South Cottonwood Canyon, where we came from the back side to reach the lake. You can see my photos here: 4-wheel to Ptarmigan Lake.

Ptarmigan Lake, Colorado One photo of myself and "Florida Nuke." Chris is a regular forum participant on my Colorado Guy web site and it was great to finally meet him!

Chris and I plan to hike Mt. Sherman near Fairplay this upcoming Tuesday. I'm looking forward!

Fall Foliage Colors In Colorado's High Country

Jones Mountain Frost Frost
It is definitely autumn in Colorado's high country. Just look at all the colors out there!

LEFT: A reddish hillside with Jones Mountain to the right.
MIDDLE AND RIGHT: There was still quite a bit of frost among the small, leafy plants at the lake. The temperature at the trailhead was a mere 39 degrees at 6 a.m. and probably much colder further up.

Pink Foliage Colorado Foliage
LEFT: Some kind of plant that turned pink. Neat!
RIGHT: Red and yellow foliage.

These pictures were submitted by Steve Garufi in Buena Vista, Colorado. His web site is www.ColoradoGuy.com.
